Merchant Ventures

Investing in the earth’s momentum

MerchantVentures

Investing in and managing businesses across commodities and logistics. Pit-to-port solutions for mines and end users alike.

Beyond assets

We invest inBusinesses

Merchant Ventures goes beyond commodity exposure — we invest in and manage the businesses that extract, process, move, and trade across our sectors. From operating mines to logistics providers and agricultural enterprises, we back the companies that power the supply chain.

01 Operating companies

Business Acquisition

We acquire and operate businesses across the commodities value chain — from extraction and processing to trading and distribution.

02 Strategic stakes

Equity Participation

Taking strategic equity positions in mining operations, logistics providers, and agricultural enterprises that align with our core sectors.

03 Growth capital

Development Investment

Providing growth capital to established businesses in coal, chrome, manganese, copper, gold, and agricultural commodities seeking to scale.

04 Infrastructure

Logistics Assets

Investing in rail sidings, rolling stock, port allocations, and integrated pit-to-port infrastructure that enables commodity movement.

05Core commodities across hard minerals, precious metals and agriculture

The portfolio

CommodityMatrix

From the deep earth to cultivated land — a portfolio spanning hard minerals, precious metals, and high-value agricultural assets, each managed with industrial precision.

01 Hard commodity

Coal

Strategic investment and management of thermal and metallurgical coal assets across key producing regions.

02 Hard commodity

Chrome

Chrome ore sourcing and processing, supporting stainless steel and alloy markets worldwide.

03 Hard commodity

Copper

Investment in copper operations driving the global energy transition and industrial demand.

04 Precious metal

Gold

Precious metals portfolio anchoring long-term value preservation and strategic asset diversification.

05 Hard commodity

Manganese

Manganese extraction and management for steel production and battery technology applications.

06 Agriculture

Citrus & Grapes

South African citrus and table grapes exported into Indian, wider Asian and Gulf markets through Southern Season, the group’s produce trading business.

Pit to port

The arterialFlow

End-to-end logistics infrastructure connecting mines to global markets. Rail sidings, transport solutions, and port allocations — orchestrated as a single, continuous supply chain.

01 Rail sidings

Mine-Side Infrastructure

Investment in and management of rail siding facilities at mine sites, enabling efficient loading and dispatch of bulk commodities directly from the source. A siding turns a truck problem into a train problem — and it is the piece most often missing from an otherwise sound operation.

02 Rail solutions

Bulk & Container Transport

Comprehensive rail logistics ranging from bulk commodity wagons to open-top container solutions, optimised for the density and handling of each commodity. Open-tops open routes and terminals a bulk-only fleet cannot reach.

03 Port allocation

Port Facilitation & Management

Facilitation and management of port allocations across key terminals, ensuring seamless transfer from rail to vessel for export and distribution. Terminal capacity is the scarcest item in the chain and the least substitutable.

Selection

What weLook for

We are an operator before we are an investor, so the questions we ask first are operating questions.

A real route to market

Product in the ground is not product on a vessel. We want to understand the road, the siding, the rail allocation and the terminal slot before we discuss the resource.

Cost position through the cycle

Commodity prices are not forecastable. Cost per ton delivered to the buyer is manageable. We look for assets that stay in the money when the price does not cooperate.

Title and compliance in order

Mining right, surface rights, environmental authorisation, water use licence, rehabilitation provision. Where these are incomplete we would rather know at the first meeting than the last.

Management that stays

In minority and growth positions the existing team is the asset. We invest where the people running the operation intend to keep running it.

Fit with what we already own

The strongest cases are those where the group can add tonnage, haulage, siding access or an export channel on day one — not only capital.

Scale that carries the chain

Integrated logistics repay volume. Small, sporadic tonnage rarely carries the fixed cost of the infrastructure that would move it efficiently.
